About The Promised Life
Cultural science student Sophie falls head over heels in love with art dealer Max, who is from an orthodox Jewish family. Max’ background and her love for him spark Sophie’s interest in her own Jewish roots. She doesn’t remember much about her Jewish father – who was a Second World War orphan – except for the fact that he abandoned her and her non-Jewish mother when she was only a little girl. The past also seems to haunt Max’s life, but in quite a different way: his family traditions force him to marry a “real” Jewish girl. The couple ultimately decides that Sophie has to go to Israel and follow a Jewish conversion program at a religious academy for girls. Sophie’s mother worries as her daughter leaves her home country: is Sophie going to become the woman everyone is hoping for?
